Li Lei (Director of Dance)
Dr. Lei received her Ph.D. degree in Dance and Dance Education majoring Dance Teaching and Administration in Higher Education from New York University in 1999 and MA degree in dance from Brigham Young University in 1994. She was a professional dancer for eight and a half years in China, for five years performing ballet as a principal dancer and then performing Chinese traditional/ethnic dance as a soloist. She has been an artistic director and a choreographer for various dance companies in the United States and in China. She specializes in ballet, modern dance, ballroom dance and ethnic dance. Dr. Lei taught physics at a university in China for 9 years before she came to the United States in 1991 as a visiting scholar under the invitation from Dickinson College in PA and Brigham Young University in Utah. She is one of the few people in the world having professional experience in both dance and physics, and still making significant contributions in the application of physical principles to dance. Her articles on Physics of Dance were published in Kinesiology for Dance, an American research publication. She taught workshops and seminars on scientific teaching methodology to dance educators and students at universities. Her Ph.D. dissertation title is “The Relevance of Newton's Laws and Selected Principles of Physics to Dance Techniques: Theory and Application.” Dr. Lei has been the director of the dance department at Dixie State College since the fall of 2000 and has taught classes in ballet, modern dance, ballroom dance and dance composition, as well as dance appreciation. She established the Dixie State Dance Company in the fall of 2001 and has been the artistic director for the dance company. |
